Ray Charles At The Variety Club Telethon On BCTV (1993, 1997, 1998)

Ray Charles performed  (at least) three (but probably four) times for the The Variety Club Telethon, a successful yearly fundraising event organized by the Vancouver station BCTV (now called Global BC).

The first time was in February 1993.
On the photo, f.l.t.r.: Jim Byrnes on guitar, Daryl Bennet on drums, Brian Newcombe on fretless bass.

The second time was on 1 March 1997.
On 1 March 1997 Ray again guested at the Variety Club Telethon. Backstage, after his performance, he was kissed on the head by Chuck Berry. Photo here.

The third time was in February 1998 at The Q.E. Theater in Vancouver BC.
The band members were Dane Deviller, Phil Robertson and Brian Newcombe. The latter wrote on his website: "I've had the honor of backing up Ray four times on this show!"

Ray Charles On The Johnny Otis Show (1955)

Johnny Otis - remaining active as a writer, performer, and producer - also began a radio career in the early fiftees, and became a popular disc jockey in southern California for KPFA. This radio broadcast success led to a weekly half-hour live variety program on television in 1955, also called the The Johnny Otis Show, that stayed on for eight years. According to Otis' autobiography, Ray featured in one of these tv shows in 1955.

Please (You Got That) (With INXS) (1993)

Please (You Got That) may well be called the most unexpected duet that Ray ever did. And it certainly wasn't the worst. His duet partner was INXS' Michael Hutchence.
The INXS album Full Moon, Dirty Hearts was released on 2 November 1993 (EastWest 4509942182 / Atlantic Records, 82541-2). Recording it took from November '92 to October '93.

Liner notes from co-writer Andrew Farriss:

"Michael [Hutchence] and I had written two songs in particular with vocal duets in mind. One was the title track of the album Full Moon, Dirty Hearts (with Chrissy Hynde) and the other was Make Your Peace.

We were in Paris working on some overdubs for the album and we heard Mr. Ray Charles was recording in the same studio. We thought it unlikely that he would sing the song with us but we gave him a copy of the song to listen to anyway. To our surprise Ray said he liked the song but the key was way out of his range.

We were running out of time so instead of re-recording it, we switched songs and suggested he listen to Please... instead. He immediately warmed to this one and Michael and he shared the vocal parts, recorded in Ray’s studio in Los Angeles in 1993. We later made a video with Mr. Charles and also appeared on David Letterman’s show playing the song live with Mr. Charles and INXS."

INXS' keyboardist Andrew Farriss also remembered how: "We're jamming away, in the third take, and Mr. Charles – he was always Mr. Charles to me – doesn't have much patience for that stuff,” wrote Tim, in the Shine Like It Does liner notes. “He wanted to get out of there as soon as possible. Then, all of a sudden, Michael runs off to have a piss. While I'm standing there, Mr. Charles comes over, puts his hand on my shoulder and goes 'Michael, I love the way you're singing this thing. It's so cool.' It was really heavy to have to say, 'Uh, Mr. Charles, I'm not Michael.' But then he laughed his head off. He thought it was really funny."

Please (You Got That)  was one of the Atlantic singles (EastWest 4509944362 / Atlantic DMD 2078; on CD, cassette, 7" & 12" vinyl) extracted from the album (released on 11 December 1993), including several mixes (Club Need Mix, Needful Dub Mix, Downtown Dub Mix, Downtown Instrumental Mix). "When Ray Charles arrived to sing his part, Hutchence was there in the studio to teach him how to produce the Hutchencesque vocal style. 'Mr. Charles,' Michael respectfully addressed him, '...it [the melody] goes like this ... (Michael sings the line and Ray Charles attempts to imitate it). After many attempts Charles says, 'Sir [Michael], I know I will eventually get it right' ...and of course he did.'"

The single reached chart positions in several markets (e.g. # 9 on U.S. Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play; # 50 on the UK Singles Chart; # 37 on the Australian ARIA Singles Chart). The video for the song was produced in New York in October 1993 and was directed by Matt Mahurin. Also read this.

In 1994 Ray was honored at the World Music Awards, in Monaco. Ray's award was presented to him by Michael Hutchence (and beauty queen Helena Christensen):

Ray Charles In Concerto In Rome (1981)

The Ray Charles Group played a concert at the Teatro Tendastrisce in Rome, on September 7, 1981. There is an excellent television version*, presenting very nice footage, thanks to dynamic (filmed, not videotaped) documentary-style camera work. The film, titled Ray Charles In Concerto, includes some funny and informative pre-concert sequences, and you can see Ray entering and exiting the stage from - so to speak - his 'perspective', a camera following him step by step.
The concert footage was introduced by Gianni Minà, and followed by a 4-minute interview with Brother Ray, sitting in his dressing room - his voice dubbed over in Italian.
The program's director was Cesare Pierleoni. The film was aired by Rai.

There's also an audio bootleg  floating around on the Web (B quality, but still with better sound than the TV show's copy I saw), taken from the TV broadcast of the concert (by some sources this audio is incorrectly dated on 7 July '81).

Ray Charles Live In Lugano (1996)

(Bootleg cover. Cf. this).

On 4 July 1996 Ray Charles with his Orchestra and The Raelettes played at the Estival Jazz, at the Centro Esposizioni in Lugano.  Barbara Morrison was the featured guest singer, and - together with the band - was opening the concert solo with four songs. She brought her own book (the band and Morrison had gone through a rehearsal session in Orléans, France).
There's a professionally recorded audio bootleg (probably taken from a radio broadcast) floating around on the Web.
A reader provided me also with a good copy of the TV recording of the concert. To my surprise it also included an extra instrumental (#1) by the band.

On 28 June 1997 Ray Charles gave a concert at the Saratoga Jazz Festival (in Saratoga Springs, NY). Someone in the audience did a rather good job in recording the show. The tape is about 60 minutes long. Track list [with obvious corrections, BS]:

Ray Charles Live At Woody's In Miami (withOUT Ron Wood) (1988)

Ray Charles performed at Ron Wood's Miami club Woody At The Beach in Miami on 3 November 1988 (not 1998, as the bootleg says). There's an incomplete recording, probably 'from the audience' - with a very poor quality - circulating on the web.

Ray Charles Live In Londen (1996)

In June 1996 Van Morrison and Ray Charles were on a tour that brought them to the Wembley Arena in London, on 15 and 19 June, the Nynex Arena in Manchester (June 21), the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham (23) and the Arena in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne (24).
A very, very poor recording, taped from the audience, of the second Wembley concert is circulating on the Web.
The only, purely documentary, value of this bootleg is in I Believe To My Soul, where Van joined Ray on stage, bringing back Them memories.
